This month’s inspiration design is based on a beautiful hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” by Thomas Obadiah Chisholm (1866-1960)
I Love Reading the Stories Behind Old Hymns
I love reading the stories behind old hymns.
They are always so encouraging, but they also challenge me in my own faith journey. So many of our standard Christian hymns were written by men and women many years ago. They had some things in common that became fuel for their faith….hardship, trials, and suffering were a common denominator with these authors. Another commonality is that their trials were the vehicle that drove them to the foot of the Christ’s cross where they met the Mercy and Faithfulness of God.
Truth filled poems and hymns were born in the depths of their despair and gave testament to the rescuing grace and faithfulness of the God that met them right where they were.
"Great is Thy Faithfulness"
Mr Chisholm died at 95 years old. Before his death he had written more than 1,200 poems and hymns.
Read these words to the hymn. Do you hear a story being told of Mr Chisholm’s journey with God his Father?
Great is Thy Faithfulness!
Great is Thy Faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!
Great is Thy Faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest.
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
This beautiful hymn did not become well known until 1945 when George Beverly Shea began singing it around the world during the Billy Graham Crusades.
A Reminder of God's Faithfulness
I hope the products we created for this month’s Encouragement Kit will be a reminder to you and your recipients of God’s Great Faithfulness!
Take some time soon and look up the history of some of your favorite hymns. I think you will be encouraged and inspired!
Sincerely,
Pan Coxwell | From the Heart Art
