Proverbs 3:5 & 6 - Having a Healthy Distrust of Self

Proverbs 3:5 & 6 - Having a Healthy Distrust of Self

Are you in need of guidance? Wanting direction for your life?

Proverbs 3:5 & 6 gives us these reminders that almost seem like steps in a recipe. Reminding us:

  1. WHO to put our trust in
  2. The need for a FULL commitment of spirit, soul and body
  3. To Trust God not only in salvation, but ALL areas of life
  4. A healthy distrust of self is acknowledging that we don’t know what’s best
  5. Turning over every area of our life to His control… laying down our Self-will to embrace His will
These steps are followed by the promise He will direct our paths. Henry Blackaby’s “Experiencing God” taught that sometimes God speaks direction through the Bible, through the advice of godly Christians, through circumstances, through the peace of the Holy Spirit, etc.

There are so many wonderful scriptural nudges to remind us the importance of Trusting God with each and every area of our lives. Many can be turned into a prayer.

Like Psalm 143:8, it could be a life verse or life motto“Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You.”

Psalm 56:3 “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

They all have a common theme or requirement: a healthy distrust of Self! I know that might sound scary, but we really don’t know the way or what is best for us, BUT God does! His plan for us is Good! When we lay down our way, our hands are free to take up and embrace HIS will, HIS plan and HIS way.

Just like the old hymn, “When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there is no other way TO BE HAPPY IN JESUS, but to trust and obey!”
